The News: Father's Day 2018 Edition

June 15, 2018

Father’s Day is this Sunday, and if your pops likes food…I got you covered. My pops likes food, but I’m unable to make the trip to South Florida, so I sent him a Yeti mug. Don’t hate, he has no interests. I mean, he does, but it mostly involves Chinese Opera music and slowly eating Chinese food. As for your fathers, let’s make sure they eat something tasty. Oh, and uh…there’s other news too.

-Several happenings are uh…happening at the local breweries. Cypress & Grove is hosting an all-day brunch from 10 AM to 6 PM prepared by Mayflower Cellars, showing the World Cup games, and every dad receives a free 10 ounce pour of any of their flagship beers (and a free side of bacon with the purchase of food). First Magnitude Brewing Company is hosting yoga, while dads get $1 off all beers, The Imposters will play live music from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM, and Stubbies Pop-up Sausages will be on hand serving food. Blackadder Brewing Company is also hosting a brunch from 11 AM to 1 PM featuring Fehrenbacher’s Artisan Sausages and beer pancakes with tickets at $25 for adults and $10 for children.

-Emiliano’s Café is hosting a Father’s Day Brunch from 10 AM to 3 PM on Sunday. They will have their popular Breakfast Cuban Sandwich, chorizo breakfast burritos, steak & eggs, and more. Pro Tip: Order one of the jalapeno-infused tequilas, don’t tell dad what it is, and enjoy.

-Pomodoro Café is serving a special Father’s Day menu all day from 11 AM to 9 PM that features black & blue pork chops, a surf & turf, skirt steak, scallops, and more. Each dad that dines will receive a free $10 gift certificate towards their next visit. Reservations are recommended by calling 352-380-9886.

-If you’re looking for something a little different to do with dad, go blueberry picking at Deep Spring Farm in Alachua. They will be open at 9 AM through 1 PM and each adult can pick up to a gallon of organic blueberries for $20. The farm also features an organic cut flower patch (take home a sunflower) two spring-fed ponds, and a nature trail. Fresh organic veggies and herbs are available to purchase as well. Pro Tips: Moms tend to like this one too…happy mom = happy dad.

-Switching gears to non-Father’s Day news; Bolay Restaurant, a popular build-your-own-bowl restaurant from South Florida is set to open June 22nd at Butler North next to 8 Degrees Ice Cream. They serve a variety of healthy salad/rice/noodle bowls and Gainesville will be their 6th location, all others are in Palm Beach to Pembroke Pines (my hometown). Side note: They refer to their bowls as “bols”, but I can’t call it that without thinking of Manute Bol. If you’re not familiar, he’s worth a google.

-The old Barnie’s Coffee space has been leased out at Park Lane on the corner of Tower Road and Archer Road. Coffee Baby is targeting a July opening, and will be a family-friendly coffee shop. One of the owners told me their goal is to provide “an environment that parents can confidently and comfortably bring young children with a dedicated soft play area to allow parents or caregivers the opportunity to relax and re-charge but it will also provide enough space for a quiet environment for people to work, study, gossip, play, reconnect and think.”

-The old Square One Burgers building may soon be home to………………….Hooters. Preliminary paperwork has been filed to revive the Gainesville location.

-Finally, I’ll leave you all with this: I have not been very good about writing reviews or posting lately as other things in my life take precedent over the blog. Contrary to a lot of misinformation out there, this is NOT what I do for a living. My day job, traveling, family, and other projects (I love cars) have been occupying my life, so I have not been venturing out as much and when I do, it’s to my old favorites. But I get great messages from y’all all the time, and I promise I’ll do better. My goal is to get some new stuff out there for y’all over the next few months before my busy travel schedule picks up again in September. Thank you all for your continued support in keeping me going. If you want to follow along with my adventures, make sure you follow me on Instagram (@keneatsgainesville or my personal account @therealkpeng). Is it football season yet?
