The News 9/2/2015

September 2, 2015

It’s time for the news! Often imitated, never duplicated, your restaurant news roundup starts now. Lots happening this week! As usual, like, share, and tell your friends this is the place where you’ll find Gainesville food news before anywhere else. That’s a guarantee.

Burgerque is as you may guess, is a burger and barbeque restaurant that is opening a location in Gainesville. Originally from Fort Myers, they will be moving into the former Maui Grill/Corner Café location at 1220 W University Avenue near campus. Owner Tim Mankins says they are looking at later this month or October as their target opening, with plans for a revamped outdoor area.

A distillery is coming to the site of the former Stubbies & Steins location. Sui Generis Distillery will somehow pack a tasting room and distillery into the old beloved pub. This is very early on in the process, and I will have more updates soon. I am curious to see the transformation of the space, as I know from first hand experience, that spot needs a lot of work.

This Sunday, September 6th marks the return of Sunday Brunch at Cymply Fresh Café. Beginning at 11 AM, they will roll out their new brunch menu with items like an eggs benedict, homemade biscuits and gravy, and as usual…bottomless mimosas.

Speaking of Sunday, did you get your ticket to the Whiskey Tasting event I’m hosting in partnership with Whiskey House and Mojo Hogtown BBQ? $50 gets you in the door for a tasting of twelve whiskeys and snacks from Mojo. We only have about 5 tickets left and they’re not available on the day of the event. Tickets can be purchased in person at Whiskey House. Pro Tip: Go on Friday and get some pretzels from LEJ Pretzels while you’re there, they’re really good.

It’s officially football season, and that means Football Fridays at Swamp Head are back. This Friday from 5 PM to 11 PM, there will be music, there will be outdoor pouring stations, and food trucks. They’ll be tapping some special brews like the Watermelon Saison du Swamp at 5 PM, Curry Saison du Swamp at 6 PM, and the Honey Ginger Saison du Swamp at 7 PM.

Also happening Friday at 5 PM is the monthly food truck rally at Cymplify. Bubba Luigi’s, LEJ Pretzel, Off the Griddle, Soup to Nuts, Go Go Stuff Yourself, and FED Food Company will all be on hand.

Tomorrow, September 3rd, Taste Pho & Noodle House at 3117 SW 34th Street (in front of Earth Fare) will be hosting a Pho Eating Contest to celebrate their opening. Starts at 7 PM and will have a $20 entry fee. You’ll have to visit before then and try to eat as much Pho as you can in 10 minutes. The top 6 eaters will have a chance to compete tomorrow night for a $300 cash prize or free Pho for 3 months.

Much more stuff coming your way soon, including the next event I’m planning for next month. Hint: It involves cocktails. Be safe, enjoy, and Go Gators and Go Coach Mac!
