The News 6/30/2015

June 30, 2015

Oh yes, it’s time for another round of news, and this is a juicy one! I wish everyone a very happy and safe 4th of July weekend coming up. I will be setting off copious amounts of explosives in celebration, and I hope you will as well. As always, please like, comment, share, and tell your friends! NEWS TIME!

-I was the first to report that Metro Diner from Jacksonville was looking at opening a location in Gainesville, now I’m happy to report they have zeroed in on a spot. They have plans to move into the 34th Street Plaza (where Sweet Bay is located) in a corner unit. The proposed location will have an outdoor café area and will be very small. More to come as I learn of  additional information.

-Whiskey House is celebrating Whiskey & Freedom this 4th of July with a $5 cocktail special featuring apple-infused small-batch 1792 bourbon. It’s appropriately named the John Quincy Adam’s Apple. ‘Murica.

-2nd Street Speakeasy is also doing a 4th of July special. Americanos, Corpse Reviver Number Blues, and White Lady cocktails are all $5. TJ Palmieri will be there after his Coin Collector cocktail was named the 2015 Florida Fernet Branca Competition winner. A portion of sales from each Coin Collector will benefit the Louis Salgar Memorial Fund.

-Cymplify is hosting their monthly food truck rally this Friday, July 3rd from 5 PM to 9 PM. Trucks include Bubba Luigi’s, Go Go Stuff Yourself, LEJ Pretzel, Off the Griddle, Soup to Nuts, and Monsta Lobsta. A free shuttle will run every 10 minutes from Buchholz High School for additional parking. Do yourself a favor and go get a pretzel from LEJ Pretzel, if you missed my rant about them on my Instagram, they’re delicious.

-Rumors of Publix opening a small-scale store on 13th and University in the site of the current McDonald’s and adjacent empty lot are taking one step closer to fruition as Publix has given the city a proposal for a ~28,000 sq. ft store complete with outdoor seating and a liquor store. More to come as this unfolds!

-Have you guys checked out Dragonfly’s new signature cocktail menu yet? The Secret of the Sakurakai is cucumber vodka, ginger liqueur, cherry blossom tea simple, and fresh lemon juice. So tasty! Also on there is Kristin’s 2014 Florida Fernet Competition winner; The Gangster & the Geisha (Nikka Pure Malt, Fernet Branca, Housemade Hibiscus Simple, and Yuzu).

-In case you missed the big beer news, 64 oz growlers are legal as of tomorrow, July 1st! To celebrate, First Magnitude Brewing Company will be filling 64 oz growlers of almost ALL of their beers…not limited to their year-round releases. There will be brewery tours every hour starting from 5 PM to 8 PM. Swamp Head Brewery will be offering 64 oz Hydroflask growlers in limited quantities tomorrow going for $60 each. These are double-walled vacuum insulated stainless steel growlers that are pretty much bad ass.

-If you like spicy food, you need to go try the Black Sesame Habanero Ramen special going on at Crane Ramen right now. It just went back on the menu yesterday. Just not this weekend, they will be closed from Friday through Sunday for the holiday weekend.

-8 Bit Bar is opening on July 10th with a free show, in the former 1982 location at 919 W University Avenue. It will feature video game consoles, beers, and live music. A video game tournament (with prizes) will feature NBA 2k13, Wrestlemania 2k14, Goldeneye, and Street Fighter 2.

-Pop A Top’s brand spankin’ new outdoor patio is almost ready. Good spot to enjoy some tasty sammiches and coffee once all this terrible rain goes away.

-Remember, keep up to date with upcoming bars and restaurants through the “What’s Coming?” section on my website. I promise you that I’ll report on things long before anyone else will. http://www.keneatsgainesville.com/#!blank/co5c
