The News 3/8/2015

March 8, 2015

Ladies and gents, it’s time once again to do the news. There’s some good stuff coming your way in the next week or so, and as always, this is your best source for Gainesville food related news. Ready? Let’s go.

-Don’t forget the Art of Ramen event at Crane Ramen is coming up next Sunday, March 15th. Over 50 people have RSVPed, but a number of you have yet to pay for a ticket. Please remember that tickets must be pre-purchased at Crane Ramen in order to attend the event. You will not be able to pay on the day of the event. If you missed the original post, here is the event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1577528739151700/

-If the earlier post was missed, Steamers is rising again like the Phoenix and will be moving into the former Lunchbox building at the Bo Diddley Plaza. The old midtown favorite, serving fried rice, curries, and the famous “Twister” sandwich (similar to a cheesesteak), will be open during the plaza renovations. They expect to be ready for business in about two months, I will update, as a more definitive date is set.

-Of course, the other big news this past week is Ameraucana Wood Fire’s announcement they are going semi-permanent at the end of this month. The truck will be parked downtown and open Wednesday through Saturday, with seating available and more consistent hours. No more chasing it around town, and last minute cancellations are both good things. There are also plans to begin offering fresh baked bread using the same naturally leavened sourdough that makes their pizzas.

-Don’t forget First Magnitude Brewing Company is hosting another Brewery Yoga event today at 1 PM. Their very own Leah Dupuie will be leading a free yoga class that is BYOM (bring your own mat). Donations will be accepted that will go towards the Springs Eternal Project, an organization dedicated to education and preservation of the many springs in our area.

-I mentioned this in a news post a couple months ago, but several folks have asked me since so I’ll report again. Outback Steakhouse is moving into the site of the former Hops on Archer Road. That is the construction that you see happening right now. There is no set timetable on opening, but this is part of the future plans to demolish Walmart and Lowes to make way for Butler Town Center. A new Super Walmart and Lowes will be constructed in the new Butler North area.

-Dragonfly Sushi will be hosting a Nikka Whiskey Tasting this Sunday, March 15th from 5 to 7 PM. Anchor Distilling Company will be on hand to give tastings of the newest Taketsuru Pure Malt by Nikka, and cocktails will be created using the product. This will be the first time anyone in Florida will be able to try this new creation by the popular Japanese whiskey maker.

-The Wooly has plans to create a sidewalk café and has already filed a permit with the city. I shall report more as I find out!

-The Hyppo’s third Gainesville location is now open in the midtown area, located in the Stadium Club building. The address is 16 NW 18th Street.

-Swamp Head Brewery will be hosting a “Berries for Babies” event on March 19th from 4 PM to 9 PM featuring a special berry flavored cask, with proceeds going towards March for Babies.

-Have news that I missed? Send it my way! I want to know it all!
