The News 8/18/2014

More reviews coming your way this week, but now it’s time once again for THE NEWS. I want to welcome all the incoming freshmen, may your Gainesville food adventures begin!

-Another super secret pop-up dinner featuring several talented local chefs is coming up this Saturday, August 23rd. Message me for more details, but tickets will be $45 and food will include a hog roast, local veggies, fresh sourdough bread basted in rendered Virginia ham and butter, and tasty adult beverages. Note: This is not my event, I am just passing along the information.

-First Magnitude Brewing Company is going to be opening their doors this coming weekend. The much anticipated brewery is located in a beautifully renovated space at 1220 SE Veitch Street. Check out their Facebook page for more details as the week progresses. The brewery will feature 20 taps and a beautiful tasting room. Much excite. Very beer. So alcohol.

-Speaking of local breweries, beginning tomorrow (August 19th), Swamp Head beer will be available in cans at local Publix stores, Winn-Dixie, ABC, Gator Beverage, and Tipple’s. Stump Knocker will be the first, with others to follow soon. Exciting news!

-A week ago, I broke the news of Mojo BBQ opening a location in downtown Gainesville (in the former Ti Amo building). The restaurant utilizes homemade wood smokers to cook all their meats, so the purists will be happy. I will also be happy to enjoy a brisket that doesn’t taste like propane much like what I had at Adam’s last week. The restaurant is aiming for a late October opening at the earliest.

-News broke that Grandy’s will be closing to make way for a PDQ a few months ago, but now we have a set date. This coming Thursday, August 21st will be Grandy’s last day in business. While I normally wouldn’t even mention this, Grandy’s has been around for a long time. So if you want to have some of their chicken one last time, do it before Thursday!

-Just a quick update on a few upcoming restaurants. No opening dates are set for either Crane Ramen or Shila BBQ. Construction on both locations are well under way. While Crane Ramen is working through some personnel issues, Shila seems to be running into permitting delays. The upcoming Whiskey House downtown is running into permit delays as well. I will be posting news updates as they are relayed to me. In the meantime, I’m eagerly anticipating all three establishments just like everyone else.
